New autism research has found a possible link to genetics. A recent study found an alteration near a gene referred to as semaphorin 5A, which may guide the growth of brain-cell extensions essential for communication between neurons. Research came from studying the genomes 1,031 families with at least two people with autism. Experiment may now be able to focus on the environmental factors that may interact with genes to cause the disorder.
